A Memorable Day for Ex-RAF Serviceman Billy at RAF Brize Norton

Our Rosebank resident, Billy, recently enjoyed a very special visit to RAF Brize Norton after receiving an invitation to attend the base’s Veterans’ Lunch.

The idea for the visit began when Billy was selected as our Resident of the Day. When asked what he would like to do the most, he mentioned that his dream would be to fly in a Spitfire. While that wasn’t possible, the team were keen to arrange something connected to his RAF background, so we reached out to RAF Brize Norton to explore any opportunities.

Billy actually served in the RAF for three years on the search and rescue team in Scotland, and the response from the base was incredibly supportive. Gerry from RAF Brize Norton got in touch to let us know about their upcoming Veterans’ Lunch and introduced us to Kate, who kindly arranged a formal invitation for Billy to attend.

Upon arrival, we were welcomed into the Sergeants’ Mess for coffee before joining other guests for an engaging talk from one of the lance corporals. We were then escorted to the on-base museum for a tour. Billy took his time looking through the displays and paused when he spotted an RAF uniform, smiling as he said his own had once looked just the same.

After the museum visit, we returned to the Sergeants’ Mess for a festive three-course lunch of parsnip soup with crusty bread, a traditional Christmas dinner and Christmas pudding with custard, along with a glass of red wine. Crackers were pulled, jokes were shared and there was an opportunity to speak with Group Captain Andy McIntyre, which Billy especially enjoyed.

The afternoon ended with coffee, a chocolate and a thoughtful gift from Kate before we made our way back. Throughout the visit, we captured photos and videos so Billy’s family can share in the experience and so he has something to look back on.
